Club Tryouts Info

All clubs run tryouts a bit differently. At Scotia Juniors, we believe all players should have an opportunity to learn to play, so our goal is no ‘cuts' during the tryout process.  Players (non-returning) who would like to play should fill out an expression of interest form (More info here) and send it to the club, and then participate in evaluation sessions. We use the evaluation sessions to build our teams, building from the top team down.

Volleyball Nova Scotia has created rules for the tryout period, and they can be found on the VNS website.

Tryout Process (Our approach to tryouts)

Nov 10 - 15
— EARLY Signing Period: Clubs can offer roster/program spots to returning players. Players can also express their interest to a club.

    • Players will receive one of the following:

      1. A spot on a specific team (A maximum of 75% of the roster will be filled this way). You are still expected to attend tryouts.

      2. A spot in the club, but team still to be determined. Player cannot be cut.

      3. Players who do not receive an early offer are required to attend tryouts/evaluations.

    • We will send offers to returning players, or to players who are enrolled in our off-season programming before we send offers to new players.

    • Players can also express interest to the club that they would like to play for.

Dec 7 - 16 - Open Tryouts: Players attend tryouts and can be given an offer at any time during the period

    • Any player can register and tryout. Registration is required. (Register here)

    • We will fill remaining roster spots that were not filled during early signing.

It is important to note, players can be selected after the tryout period, however VNS states that once an athlete accepts an offer, they will not be able to switch teams/clubs.

Re-offering Period: November 10 - 15
During this period we are permitted to send offers to players from the previous year. New players can also be sent an offer, or send an expression of interest to play with the club.

We typically utilize this period to fill at least half of our rosters for the upcoming season. Players can receive an offer for a position on a specific team, or an offer which will guarantee a roster spot within in club. Then, we utilize the Tryout Period to evaluate offered players to pick teams.

Tryout Period (December 8 - 16)
We will utilize this period to fill remaining open roster spots on our teams. This means we will:

  • evaluate players who have accepted an offer to be in the club to determine which team they will be on

  • evaluate new players who tryout for open roster spots

  • evaluate new players who tryout for open roster spots
